The animals that have populated the earth have changed and evolved since the universe began - the proof is in the dinosaur skeletons. But never before has one of those species completely dominated the planet in such a powerful and dominating way. Yes, we are that species. Population controls and shifts used to be determined by the forces of nature and the environment, and were a part of the natural progression of the planet. But now we must accept the fact that the responsibility for the number and variety of animals largely rests in our hands.
So what can you do, today, to help make sure that the wide range of species our world needs to function properly survives another day? Here is a great list of 10 Easy Things You Can do At Home, as outlined by the Endangered Species Coalition:
- Learn about endangered species in your area
- Visit a national wildlife refuge, park, or other open space
- Make your home wildlife friendly
- Provide habitat for wildlife by planting native vegetation in your yard
- Minimize use of herbicides and pesticides
- Slow down when driving
- Recycle and buy sustainable products
- Never purchase products made from threatened or endangered species
- Report any harassment or shooting of threatened and endangered species
- Protect wildlife habitat
Because we are part of an intricate ecosystem, a collection of parts that all need each other for the planet to keep on spinning, everything we do has an impact on the other animals in the system. So when we are making decisions about what we eat, what we buy, how we travel, everything we do, we are making decisions about the future of endangered species on our world.
We are at a crucial time in the development of our planet - and over the next few decades we will determine which animals survive and which will be lost forever. We need to be sure we are creating an awareness of these issues in our children, as they grow up and take the reigns. If you have kids, or access to other people's children, check out Kids Planet.
They've got some great ideas for how young people can participate in defending wildlife, as well as information of endangered species around the world, and also some fun games to get involved in the issues in a recreational way. Start playing here!
We can save these animals if we work together, and get involved in saving one life at a time. You can start in your own backyard!
