Things have changed a lot for women over the past few decades, and there are some things that didn't change in time to empower the women who are coming into their golden years now, in the new century. Certain opportunities and privileges were denied these women when they were younger, leaving them in a vulnerable position today.
Enter the Older Women's Network (OWN), a non-profit, non-governmental, voluntary agency started by a group of women in 1986. Their mission is to "achieve a caring society in which older and midlife women have the opportunity to live in security and with dignity; to participate in the choices affecting their lives; to give mutual support and share creative interests and activities; and to realize their potential."
OWN is involved in housing projects, including building a condo on the Esplanade for single women in need, and they operate a co-op office, as well as facilitate community projects and events in a variety of fields. The group also provides a wide range of online resources, event listings, and a reading room that exists in their downtown co-op. The Alfreda Mordas Reading Room highlights literary contributions from women, and hosts events.
OWN is looking for volunteers - if you are interested, see the listing here.
